Written in 1994 at Keele (Staffordshire, UK), the quartet has two movements: 1) Andante con moto and 2) Lento. The first is a sonata form, and the second is the cycle of 7 variations on Scholia (Epitaph) of Seikilos that was engraved on a tomb-stone in 1st century A.D. – one of the earliest exaples of notated music. The quartet was not commissioned by anyone, and possibly this is the main reason why so far it has never been played.
